About Lu

Lu Luo, PhD, DCM, DiplAHM, LAc, is a Virginia- and DC-licensed acupuncturist with more than ten years of clinical and academic experience in Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and herbal medicine. Their approach combines the depth of traditional Chinese medicine with modern scientific research and evidence-informed clinical care.

Lu earned a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Moxibustion from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a PhD in Chinese Materia Medica from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Their extensive training included hospital-based clinical residency and advanced research in Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, herbal pharmacology, and integrative medicine. Following their doctoral training, Lu completed postdoctoral research at Georgetown University Medical Center.

As a clinician and researcher, Lu has authored and co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and has served as Principal Investigator on nationally funded research projects. Their research experience has given them a strong understanding of the mechanisms, safety, and clinical applications of Chinese herbal medicine while deepening their interest in integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare.

Clinically, Lu works with patients experiencing chronic and acute pain, musculoskeletal conditions, stress-related concerns, women’s health conditions, and internal medicine concerns. They are particularly passionate about reproductive and women’s health, chronic pain management, and integrative care. Their goal is to look beyond symptoms, understand each patient’s individual pattern and underlying needs, and develop personalized treatments that support healing, resilience, and overall well-being.

Lu is also deeply passionate about Chinese herbal medicine. Drawing on their doctoral research in Chinese Materia Medica, they approach herbal therapy with both respect for classical traditions and attention to contemporary research on safety and effectiveness. Each treatment is thoughtfully individualized according to the patient’s presentation and pattern.

Fluent in English and Mandarin, Lu strives to create a warm, thoughtful, and collaborative environment in which every patient feels heard, understood, and supported throughout their healing journey.

Schedule: Sunday and Monday mornings or early afternoons for private sessions, and Wednesday afternoons and evenings for Community Acupuncture (subject to change).
